SpermVital AS has developed a novel technology prolonging the self-life of spermatozoa, both prior to and after insemination. This is achieved by immobilizing the sperm cells in a network of a natural gel substance before cryopreservation. This immobilization enables release of sperm cells over an extended period of time in the uterus after insemination, making timing of insemination less critical relative to ovulation, and may increase the odds of fertilization. Results from in vitro studies using models mimicking uterus in vivo conditions have shown that gels with immobilized sperm may dissolve slow or fast, depending on the media and gel composition. Quality control of the existing product and further research and optimization is based on microscopic assessments, flow cytometric assessments (e.g. viability, acrosome integrity, DNA integrity), ATP measurement, using in vivo like models and finally verification of results through field trials. The SpermVital® technology is applied in several cattle AI markets, on different breeds. Further, the technology has successfully been applied on ovine, equine and porcine semen and it is also a goal to include human application. Results from in vitro studies will be presented in comparison with field fertility data.
