The overall aim of the PhD thesis was to acquire more knowledge about the SpermVital (SV) alginate gel, particularly concerning dissolution, sperm quality, and fertility following insemination. Also, the response of Norwegian Red heifers and cows to estrous synchronization and induction of ovulation was assessed.
The findings of the thesis demonstrated a competitive reproductive performance of SV processed semen compared with standard processed semen following AI, despite using fewer SV processed sperm cells per AI dose than previously.
Berg and co-workers found profiles of ovarian dynamics of Norwegian Red heifers and cows that were compatible with successful synchronization of estrus and ovulation, thus indicating an interval for the optimal timing of AI. Studies including genital tract endoscopy and in vitro analyses following insemination indicated prolonged dissolution of the SV gel and gradual release of immobilized sperm cells expressing a high reproductive potential, possibly enabling an extended window of time for successful AI in cattle.
The findings of the current thesis thus have a direct practical and economic impact concerning the production and use of SV semen.
